Tory Lanez is denied bond while appealing assault conviction for shooting Megan Thee Stallion
Tory Lanez will remain in prison pending the appeal of his 10-year sentence for shooting his ex-lover, hip hop star Megan Thee Stallion.
The 31-year-old rapper’s attorneys asked a judge in Los Angeles to let the rapper live with his son and wife on bond instead of behind bars during the appeal.
The judge denied the request during a hearing on Thursday and pointed to how Lanez was convicted of a violent felony, has a history of violating court orders and isn’t a US citizen.
His defense argued that although he is Canadian, he has an active work visa and has no reason to return back to the country.
Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, shot Megan in the feet during a drunken argument after a pool party at Kylie Jenner‘s house in 2020 that also involved Megan’s assistant Kelsey Harris.

Lanez begged the judge to not send him to jail in an LA courtroom on August 8.
But he was sentenced to 10 years in prison on three felony convictions- negligent discharge of a firearm, assault with a semiautomatic firearm, and carrying a loaded and unregistered firearm.
His lead attorney Jose Baez slammed the ‘incredibly harsh’ sentence last month and claimed the rapper was being punished for his celebrity status.
‘We’re extremely disappointed,’ he said outside the courthouse.
‘I have seen vehicular homicide and other cases where there’s death, and the defendant still gets less than 10 years.’
Baez said of the sentence that he is ‘really just another example of someone being punished for their celebrity status and someone being utilized to set an example. And he’s not an example. He’s a human being.’
Lanez’s lawyers attempted to have him released on bail while they appealed his verdict but this has now been denied by a judge.
Court reporter Meghann Cuniff shared screen-grabs of the motion on X. It asked that Lanez be permitted ‘to live locally in Los Angeles’ rather than in prison.
It comes after the rapper reportedly married Raina Chassagne, the mother of his six-year-old son Kai, while serving time for shooting Megan Thee Stallion.
Chassagne, who was seen weeping outside the courthouse after Lanez’s sentencing, is referred to in the court filings as his ‘wife.’
